The Piaggia winery remains without a doubt, the shining beacon of light in the Carmignano territory. While the region grows and produces continue to improve their practices (and, ultimately, their wines) Piaggia has been at the top of its game for longer than I can recount. What's more, the wines here are getting even better. Sylvia Vannucci places the utmost importance of defining the unique terroirs throughout the vineyards, along with a steady reduction of oak usage in the winery. While these changes have pushed purity and quality through the roof, they have done so without removing the classy sheen that sets Piaggia apart from its competition. If I were forced to pick one producer in Carmignano to follow, it would be Piaggia.
94 Points - 2021 Carmignano Il Sasso
The 2021 Carmignano Il Sasso impresses with its rich bouquet of crushed plums, sage and balsamic spice. It's pure energy on the palate, silky yet sleek with racy acidity and depths of crisp wild berry fruits, underpinned by tactile minerals and hints of tangerine. The 2021 leaves the palate refreshed, finishing structured and long as violet inner florals and Blackberry notes fade. This super seductive Il Sasso will win a lot of hearts. This is a blend of 70% Sangiovese, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc.
